Brief Overview

Dangerous Love is a novel by Ben Okri, first published in 1996. It is a compelling coming-of-age story set in Lagos, Nigeria. The narrative details the troubled psychological and social transformation of the young protagonist, Omovo.

The story starts with Omovo as a young artist living a chaotic life marked by poverty and frustration. He shaves his head completely, a new look that immediately brings him mockery. He lives in a disintegrating family unit with his angry, drinking father and his stepmother, Blackie.

Omovo begins a secret, dangerous love for Ifeyiwa, a melancholy, married woman who hates her husband, Takpo. Omovo paints a work called “Drift,” showing the city’s chaos. Soldiers seize the painting at an exhibition, claiming it criticizes national progress.

Omovo and his friend, Keme, later discover the mutilated body of a young girl in a park. This ritual murder deeply traumatizes Omovo. Omovo is later attacked and beaten by unknown men.

Ifeyiwa’s husband, Takpo, catches Omovo drawing his wife. Takpo tears up the sketches and falsely accuses Omovo of making his wife run away.

Omovo’s family life completely collapses: his father catches Blackie cheating with Tuwo, murders Tuwo with a machete, and goes to prison. Ifeyiwa runs away and is later found dead. Omovo resolves to use his art to transform the pain of his life.
