Brief Overview

Home is a novel by Toni Morrison, published in 2012. The novel focuses on how its characters navigate the harsh racial injustices of the 1950s to find healing, personal identity, and a true sense of home.

The story centers on Frank Money, a Korean War veteran suffering from deep mental pain and PTSD. He escapes from a hospital called the “crázy ward” in the North. Frank rushes home to Lotus, Georgia, because his younger sister, Cee, is in urgent danger.

Frank has loud, bad memories of the Korean War. Kind strangers help him travel south on buses and trains. He faces racism and violence on his way and struggles to stay sober because of his painful past.

Cee had left home and found work for Dr. Scott in Atlanta. The doctor performed harmful, secret medical procedures on her. A housekeeper named Sarah helps Frank find Cee. Frank rescues his sister, who is very ill from the experiments.

Back in Lotus, Miss Ethel Fordham and other neighborhood women help heal Cee. Cee accepts that she cannot have children because of the doctor’s actions. Cee learns she must become a strong person who does not need saving. Frank finally reveals his worst secret: he killed a small Korean girl during the war.

Frank and Cee then bury the bones of a man they saw buried in a field when they were children. They mark the grave with a piece of wood that reads, “Here Stands A Man.” The brother and sister return home together, finally finding peace.
