Brief Overview

Moth Smoke is a novel by Mohsin Hamid, first published in 2000. The story is a harsh social commentary on Pakistan’s deep class divisions, corruption, and political tensions during the nuclear tests of that era.

The novel is centered on Darashikoh Shezad, or Daru, who is the accused in a trial for killing a child. Daru loses his job at a bank and becomes poor. He starts using drugs like hash and heroin (“hairy”) and begins selling hash to his wealthy acquaintances for money.

Daru’s best friend is the rich Aurangzeb (Ozi). Daru begins a secret love affair with Ozi’s wife, Mumtaz. Mumtaz is also a journalist who writes secretly under the pen name Zulfikar Manto.

Ozi hits and kills a young boy with his car and leaves the scene of the accident. Daru saw the accident but did not tell the police. Daru soon joins Murad Badshah, his friend and drug dealer, to rob high-end boutiques.

Daru is later severely beaten by the father of a boy he sold drugs to. Mumtaz tenderly cares for him while he heals. Daru is finally arrested for the fatal hit-and-run that Ozi committed.

Mumtaz leaves Ozi and uses her writing to defend Daru and publicly expose the social corruption. The book details Daru’s rapid journey from being an unemployed man to a criminal, set against the hypocritical wealth of Lahore.
